Fall color-blocking: Philip Lim for Target

I was kinda not affected when the 3.1 Philip Lim collection released at Target. I read and saw pics of a lot of bloggers scoring one piece after another, bags, dresses, jackets and I thought to myself what's the rush. I was like all zen in my mind. Then one day, while grocery shopping, like it always is with shopping at Target, I got distracted by the clothes racks especially the special Philip Lim collection in one small corner.

To my surprise, they were well stocked with the different styles in all sizes available. I tried on this striking color-blocked pullover and fell in love with it. The best part is the fabric and cut are all high-quality but the price is still within the 'Target' range. It looked to be perfect for pairing with regular denims (yes, they are making a comeback after a hiatus!) and a peppy bright colored bag (again from Target).

I am not the biggest fan of clothes or bags in Target, but guess this look has come together, right? Are you lured into shopping at Target's clothes/bag section especially when you are on a grocery run?

Checked and color-blocked

This happens with me most of the times..I get supremely creative in dressing up usually on weekdays but ironically, I don't get enough time in the morning rush to click pictures for the blog. And then most of my
winter weekends are spent at home in PJs so no photo shoots

This outfit is from one of those work-week days, when I decided to mix prints (color-block and gingham checks) with a hint of leopard print on the shoes and felt that it would a waste to not capture it for the blog. I recreated this look on the following weekend and here it is for you to browse through.

I think it's safe to say that gingham checks are as versatile as polka dots - very easy to mix prints or wear them as-is. I felt a little daring and paired the outfit with my fav leopard print kitten heels (one of my best purchases!). Red lips and a red beads completed the look and added a little bit of oomph for the Saturday excursion with hubby.

What do you think? Would you try mixing prints - color-block and gingham checks? Do tell..

What I am wearing: Gingham checks shirt - NY&Co.; Color-blocked sweater - NEU, Ireland; Corduroy pants - NY&Co.; Leopard print kitten heels - Kelly & Katie @ DSW; Bag - Linking road, Mumbai; Red beads necklace - Groopdealz; Aviators - Tory Burch; Earrings - Birthday gift from a friend; Beads bracelet - Target; Watch - Husband's Casio chronograph

P.S.: These pics are from fall season and so the yellow leaves, lovely weather and the sun! Its been long I wanted to post these pics but always got post-poned. Well, as they say, better late than never :)

Color-blocking 101- Part 2

So moving on from my 2 cents earlier on Color-blocking 101-Part 1, I am ready to spill out some more...Incidentally, part-1 continues to be my 'TOP-blog-post-viewed-and-read', you can check it out here if you haven't already.
To recap, the Part-1 focused on getting you ready for color-blocking, keeping accessories neutral and intro to the world of color-blocked accessories.

1. Add deep, rich-colored tees to your closet; the ones that fit you perfectly (without a jacket) and are comfy to wear. I would go ahead and say - do splurge on them as they are absolute closet essentials.
See colored denims, skirts, shorts everything can go out of trend or bore the hell out of you (I am just saying!) but a tee in a pure rich color will be your best friend forever!!  I have seen that tees usually go on sale sometime or the other. And when they do, don’t be hesitant to grab them in multiple colors. This is not the time to think that I will get another tee from a different shop. Colored tees are versatile, you can dress up (for office-wear) or dress down (on denims/shorts) and hence the rule above.
Quick Tip - If it fits, don't be shy to buy in bulk.

2. Give the colored blazers a try – not the usual navy, blues blacks or greys, try a colored blazer actually. Last summer I just did that and now I am hooked on to my pink blazer I must say. It might be too much of color for the office, but hey if you can carry it off with confidence and panache who’s to stop you wearing that (well, there’s HR but they wouldn’t mind it on Fridays I am sure ;))

3. The easiest and chic-est way to try this trend - go for a color-blocked sheath dress, like the one here.
With some metallic jewelry and pumps you are ready for a day at work or a night-out.

In part-1, I did a color blocked outfit for office/formal wear, but now its time for 'Color-blocked Casuals'. I got these coral shorts a couple of months. Man! Coral is the color, the new color for summer, the new color for fun.
I have always seen coral capris at Gap/Banana Republic but never had the guts to buy them. But when these shorts were on sale, I just had to grab them.

This outfit is also a tribute to my polo neck tee. I wore it as a part of an office-casual outfit usually on Fridays and that was about it. I just couldn’t find any creative ideas to remix it – the drab, old polo tee.
Well, polo tees are super comfy and come in rich deep-colored hues – so they perfectly fit the bill of a color blocking must-have. So here is one of the polo tees I have, back and rocking the color blocking trend.
When color-blocking I usually prefer to go nude with my shoe-color, but you can always try some fun colors if you are in the mood for it :)

Color-blocking 101 - Part 1

I think color blocking is one of the coolest n stress-free ways of looking savvy. Some tips on color blocking

1.       If you are a newbie to color blocking go with basic colors/ the ones you’re comfortable with. For example; black n white, grey n black, red n blue. Pick any 2 colors and pair them. Just remember the colors need to be deeper and richer - meaning faded denims or ripped denims won’t help in creating a perfect color block outfit.
I would suggest adding a colored denim or skirt to your closet if you want to try color-blocking.  If you are not yet up to wearing colored bottoms, the summer is a perfect time to try the colored shorts trend – colored shorts just add the right amount of well color, perfect for summer n hot temperatures, sightseeing tours, vacations – the list of pros goes on and on ;))

2.       Another basic rule so that your colors stand out is adding a touch of neutrality/ neutral-ness (u get the hint, right?).
Wear neutral colors for accessories and shoes – tan or dark brown, black, and beige are all neutral colors. I bet you will have at least one pair of shoes in these colors, so try them on with the color blocked outfit.
I would add a colored bag just to jazz up the color blocked outfit – but again go neutral if you are not comfortable there.

3.       If you are in a mood of experimenting, u can do a triad of colors – add a broad belt to your outfit – shorts n tee, skirt n tee/shirt. You could also add a thin/skinny belt if you are doing the colored denims and tee/blouse look. The belt can be a neutral color and you can match the shoes with your belt. Or it can be a funky color just to add that extra level of color blocking and you can go neutral on shoes.

4.       Another fun outfit idea is getting a color blocked accessory. I don’t know how that happened, but color blocking was sorta ‘cool’ last summer too. And I remember grabbing this color blocked satchel-cum-crossbody bag from Aldo last summer (in the pics below).
It was the perfect accessory for my rather straight and businessy outfits to office.  Plus it was a cross body so for my adventures/outings after office (with husband of course ;)), I could just sling it across and I was good to go.

5.       If you are in a mood to experiment, you can try the color blocked shoes/stilettoes/sandals. They are ‘abso-freaking-lutely’ fabulous and I wish so desperately to own one.
The color blocked shoes can add the right amount of oomph to your LBD (Little Black Dress) on a balmy night out or LWD (Little White Dress) on a summer afternoon.
Color –blocked cuffs/bracelets earrings and even color blocked necklaces are just bursting with hues and great pieces to start off with trying the color-blocking trend

There are some more tips I have in my bag of wisdom but I am going to hold on to them till the another post (Color blocking 101 Part-2). For now, I will let you see/judge /review a color-blocking outfit that I came up with for office wear.
I want to do a special mention for my leopard print shoes *Drumroll please* It’s the first time they are showing up on my blog. They are one of the best pumps I own - perfect fit, perfect heel. They are so very comfy and versatile - I wear them to office, to dancing with my friends, on weekends, almost everywhere ;))
